no hdcd playback
April 23rd, 2007 by agree499I’m really glad to have a remastered version of one of my all-time favorite albums, but when I play it on my Rotel RCD-971 player the HDCD light doesn’t come on and it sounds to me like it’s isn’t playing in HDCD. Is there anything I can do about this? The dvd works as expected. It’s great to hear versions of this classic album that sound much better than the orginal cd version but I can’t help feeling that I’m missing out on that last bit of detail.

This is a common complaint I’ve heard. One camp says that it really sounds ‘better’ and seems like the HDCD is working even though the light is off, the other camp seems to think the light is indicitave of the presence of a carrier or flag or something and the process won’t work without it.
Frankly, I’ve never heard much of a difference, most HDCDs sound better because they took the time to do it right, and the Pacific Microsonics A-D converters sound so good anyway.
For the best in audio, check out the DVD-A tracks!
Both the surround remix or the stereo high def remaster are really well mastered.
